German MPS briefed on Moroccan move to steer on UN plan for Sahara
Morocco-Germany, Politics, 10/18/2000
Morocco's foreign affairs and cooperation minister Mohamed Benaissa explained Tuesday to a visiting German MPS delegation Moroccan moves meant to level roadblocks before UNO's settlement plan for the Sahara.
The head of Moroccan diplomacy recalled the kingdom's recent proposal in last month's Berlin meeting under the aegis of James Baker, personal envoy of the UN secretary general, said a department release. The other side showed total lack of will and made no counter-proposals on means to overcome obstacles, said Benaissa blaming the stalling of the process on the other side's wrong interpretation of basic provisions of the plan and attempts to deny populations from the Moroccan southern provinces the right to take part in the consultation.
To steer on the process, the kingdom answered the call of the personal envoy in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions, namely 1309, and proposed open and sincere dialog within the respect of Moroccan sovereignty and territorial integrity and the respect of international legality, Benaissa said.
