Berri reelected as speaker of the Lebanese parliament

In its first session held on Tuesday, the new Lebanese parliament elected Nabih Berri as the speaker of the parliament for a third session of the Lebanese parliament. He won 124 votes out of 126 votes for parliamentarian who attended the session. Two white papers were seen in the ballot center.

Elie Farazli was also reelected as the deputy speaker for parliament. Parliament members Amin Shkeir and Farid al-Khazin were elected as secretaries besides three commissioners.

Following his election as a speaker of parliament Berri stressed the need of making the agreement provides for developing cooperation, fraternity and cooperation with Syria as the best example for the inter-Arab present and future relations.

Berri stressed the importance of fostering relations between the two sisterly states at the economic, political, cultural, social, security and defense levels.

He explained that: " Strong and prosperous Lebanon is an urgent interest for Syria and that a strong and prosperous Syria is a continued interests for Lebanon and that the two countries have interests to establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East under the umbrella of international resolutions."

Berri stressed that the file of the Israeli aggression and occupation will be kept open until the release of the Lebanese detainees from the Israeli jails, ending the Israeli occupation of Shebaa farms and paying compensations for Lebanon as a result of the Israeli, invasions, aggressions and occupation.

He stressed commitment to the national rights and the liberation of the occupied Arab lands in the Golan up to June 4, 1967 border lines and backing the right of the Palestinian people to return back to their homes, to self determination and the establishment of their own independent state with Jerusalem as a capita.

He indicated the stances advocated by the Arab masses everywhere.

Stances which revealed a strong Arab will to refuse normalization with the Israeli enemy and clinging to conditions and principles which guarantee the Arab rights.

On the internal conditions in Lebanon, Berri added that the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud will start urgent consultations in order to set up a new government, noting that the formation of this government serves the interest of Lebanon, in the first place, towards the pressing regional developments on the position in the region and expected consequences on Lebanon as a result.

However, the first session of the new Lebanese parliament which was opened by parliament member Qabalan Issa al-Khouri (in being the oldest member). It was attended by 126 out of the total number of 128. It was also attended by the prime minister Salim al-Hoss, the cabinet ministers and heads of trade union and the ambassadors accredited to Lebanon and crowded number of press members.
