Mubarak's speech to the inaugural session of Sharm El-Sheikh Summit
Egypt, Politics, 10/16/2000
Egypt's President Mubarak stressed the need to take urgent decisions to bring things to their normal and inject hope and confidence in future of coexistence between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
In his speech in the opening session of Sharm el-Sheikh Summit,he asserted that in the absence of decisions, dark clouds of fears and doubts will be looming on the area and eclipsing its future.
President Mubarak warned that an explosive situation would blow up the Middle East peace process and extend the situation beyond the borders of the region, giving extremists the opportunity to act.
He said that he had undertaken the initiative to convene the summit he chairs together with President Clinton to put an end to such developments and to do every effort to halt them.
The President said that the challenge to peace must be confronted and the historic opportunity to salvage peace should not be missed.
Moreover, the President expressed hope in having all parties up to this challenge; a challenge of peaceful coexistence, respect for the sanctuaries, rights and fulfillment of duties.
Mubarak voiced his wishes that Sharm El-Sheikh Summit would realize hopes of the peoples before they give way to despair and mess, and their efforts be doomed to oblivion.
