Intensive discussions today in Sharm El-Shiekh summit
Egypt, Politics, 10/16/2000

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said that "accelerating the convening of the Sharm el-Sheik summit today is due to the serious situation and does not mean presenting conditions," adding that "the idea is tackling a big problem which is the military operations against the Palestinians which must not be repeated again."

Moussa assured of the necessity of stopping the military operations and the Israeli forces' withdrawal from the areas they have entered.

Moussa demanded the necessity that the discussions that will be raised in the summit must be serious, referring to that the summit will tackle a problem that confronts and threatens the whole peace process as well as the future of stability in the area.

Meantime, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is to open today Sharm el-Sheikh summit that will be attended by the U.S President Bill Clinton, the Palestinian Yasser Arafat, the Israeli prime minister Ihud Barak, King Abdullah II of Jordan, U.N secretary general Kofi Annan and the higher representative for the foreign policy at the European Union Javier Solana.

Usama El-Baz, the political advisor of the Egyptian president, stated that "Egypt had basic requirements for the success of Sharm El-Sheik (summit) the most important of which is not putting the Israeli and the Palestinian side on equal footing concerning the seizing of fire and the necessity of withdrawing the Israeli forces."

El-Baz added that the requirements include implementing these demands as well as "forming an international fact-finding committee to prevent repetition of the Israeli provocation acts."

El-Baz said that "the Egyptian efforts are for serving the peace and not for obstructing it'.
