Clinton announces summit with Barak, Arafat, Mubarak in Egypt
Regional, Politics, 10/14/2000

US President Bill Clinton says he will participate in a Middle East summit Monday October 16 with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

In a statement issued October 14 in Washington, Clinton said the summit will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt with Mubarak serving as host.

He said the aim of the meeting will to stop the violence and establish a fact-finding mechanism concerning how it erupted in order to prevent its reoccurrence. He said the Israelis and Palestinians need to "find a way back to dialogue and negotiations."

Since Israel and the Palestinians missed the September 13 deadline for achieving a permanent peace accord and settling all the contentious issues between them, the most severe violence in years has erupted.
