U.S pressure keeps Sudan off UN Security Council
Sudan, Politics, 10/12/2000

The Sudanese government criticized the role played by the U.S.A for keeping it from winning a seat in the UN Security Council despite of the support it has from the African group.

El- Fateh Orwa, the Sudanese delegate at U.N said "the intensive U.S effort is the reason for depriving Sudan from the seat," while praising the support of the African group.

Mauritius which was supported by the U.S.A won a seat after 4 rounds of secret voting. The USA which has tense relations with Sudan due to imposed sanctions claims that Sudan has a poor human rights record and should not be on the Security Council.

Orwa said "Washington's efforts and pressure .. enabled it to stand against the people's choice in choosing their representatives."
