Report: British daily comments on al-Aqsa uprising
Regional, Politics, 10/12/2000

The British daily Daily Telegraph issued on Tuesday said that the Palestinian Intifada ( uprising) has sent waves of anger throughout the Arab states and shaken the pro- West Arab regimes and destroyed the credibility of the US as a broker in the peace process.

The Daily Telegraph added that protest and demonstrations were held in Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco and the Arab Gulf States where political resentment is banned, adding that these protest demonstrations are expected to be repeated on tomorrow (Friday) which was declared by the Palestinians as a " second day of anger" against the Israeli occupation forces.

The British paper added that the essence of the Arab anger is Israel and that it will be easy that this will follow a wave of people's regret against their governments and their inability to support the Palestinian people.

The paper said that most of the Arab demonstrators and protesters believe that it is time to carry out a local uprising to topple the " corrupted " regimes.

The paper said that the first Arab reaction towards that was the call to unify the ranks and in this course President Mubarak called for an Arab summit on October 21 and the Iraqi President was invited then to this summit conference at the beginning, but he is now welcomed to this summit.

The paper continued that it is premature to talk about taking the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein into account but " the failure of the US policies led to the increase of ' warmth' towards Iraq and objections raised by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to Iraq's attending the Arab summit were neglected."

The paper said that Iraq's invitation to the Arab summit is a sort of pleasing the Arab public opinion who can not understand why sanctions have continued against Iraq for ten years and the Arabs blame these sanctions for the death of more than one million Iraqi child.

The paper added from the Arab point of view, Israel should face the same fate Iraq had in imposing sanctions on it because of its defiance of the UN resolutions. It added " as Arab leaders know," this will never happen, however, the Arabs cannot avoid accusing Washington of being biased to Israel.
