Mubarak plays basic, pivotal role in containing situation
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 10/11/2000
Intensive efforts for breaking the deadlock of the ME peace process and for maintaining Middle East security and stability are still going on, "AL Akhbar daily" learned.
The paper also said that President Mubarak is playing an essential and pivotal role in ongoing contacts which are aimed at containing the situation on sound bases.
The 4-hour- expanded meeting held by President Mubarak on Monday with the Political and Executive Leaderships came as a reaction to these contacts, where President Mubarak was to listen to various views on the development of events.
A high level source say underway consultations and contacts dealt with prospects for a quick visit by President Clinton to Gaza and Jerusalem to meet Arafat and Barak for reaching agreed upon formula that could calm down revolt on Palestinian street. Sources close to various parties say President Clinton is highly interested in containing the situation, seeking to convene a trilateral meeting attended by Arafat Barak if such a formula was reached.
These quarters cite a number of basic conditions which must be observed in order that this initiative may be successful including acceptance by President Mubarak to take part in the summit.
These conditions are based on the following points:
- Immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian territories in order to calm down revolt on the Palestinian street.
- Back tracking on threats addressed to Palestinian people and the Palestinian National Authority.
- Setting up an international investigations Committee.
- Emphasizing that dubious visits to Islamic place should not be repeated.
- Solving difficult equation between the issue of Jerusalem and international resolutions which assert that sovereignty over East Jerusalem and Islamic shrines is a right of the Palestinians as these are occupied lands to which resolutions no 242 and 338 apply.
Meantime, the Israeli Ambassador to Egypt got President Mubarak's reply to Barak's message regarding developments of bloody events in the occupied lands.
President Mubarak, in a phone conversation with King Abdullah II of Jordan, discussed the latest developments in the occupied territories and efforts designed to defuse tension in the occupied lands.
During the call, the two leaders stressed the importance of working to put an end to violence against Palestinians.
