The Palestinian uprising confronts the Israeli army, settlers
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 10/9/2000
Activities of al-Aqsa uprising continued on Sunday for the 11th running day despite the escalated Israeli oppression and the tough military siege.
Palestinian youths in various parts of the West Bank, Gaza and the territories of 1948 took the streets in demonstrations of anger turned later into confrontations with the Israeli occupation forces in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Nablus, al-Khalil, Bethlehem, Rafah, Gaza and areas adjoining the Israeli settlers. Young man Fahd Mustafa Baker was killed on Sunday and thereby the number of Palestinians killed in the uprising since its beginning reached 111 while other 1400 were reported as wounded.
In collaboration with the settlers, the Israeli occupation forces carried out revenge acts against the Palestinians in Jerusalem and the other lands of the west bank and the 1948 territories. The Israeli forces demolished several buildings for the Palestinians near Natsareim settlements in Gaza and arrested in the territories of 1948 several young men from Arara town, in Negev district and Tabaraya city where huge demonstrations were held.
The Israeli settlers also cordoned Azmi Beshara's house in al-Nasera and threw stones on it. They broke trade shops in al-Khadeira city and burnt Palestinian cars in al-Afoula, burnt also " Hassan Beck" mosque near Holoun and destroyed Muslim tombs and broke doors of shops in Jeser al-Zarqa town, attacked a church in Shafa Amre and destroyed the epitaphs of tombs in Jafa, attacked the Armenian quarters in Jerusalem and burnt various properties for Palestinians in Bedya, near Nablus.
Despite all these acts by the Israeli military and the repression acts, the struggle continued. Several Palestinian youths detonated an explosive in an Israeli tank heading for Natsareim settlement and the Israeli sources admitted that one soldier was wounded.
In Jerusalem, the Palestinian demonstrators attacked the Israeli on-foot patrol with stones, attacked the Israeli settlement known as Nafi Yaqoub, north Jerusalem and clashed with the Israeli occupation forces and settlers in Ramullah, Beit Jala, Nablus, Ramsis town, and Bethlehem and the Israeli forces used live weapons to disperse the demonstrators and this resulted in wounding some 250 Palestinians.
The Israeli helicopters wounded the Palestinian demonstrators near Natsareim settlement in Gaza, brought in some 30 tanks to protect the Israeli settlers in this settlement and prevented planes from taking off the Palestinian airport a matter which prevented the transport of 50 seriously wounded Palestinians to the United Arab Emirates for medical treatment.
News reports in Gaza noted that some 13 citizens in Gaza are seriously wounded.
Meantime, the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak threatened the Palestinian government to prevent any contact between the Palestinian areas and to cut aids and sums and to install new military positions inside the Palestinian territories, if the Palestinian authority will not very soon halt the uprising.
Barak also met with the leader of the Likud Ariel Sharon to discuss arrangements for confronting the Palestinians and to form an emergency summit. Following the meeting Sharon renewed total backing to Barak in pressuring the Palestinians.
