Turkey to open a gate with Iraq
Iraq-Turkey, Politics, 10/9/2000
The Turkish daily Millet issued on Saturday said that intensive meetings have started at the Turkish foreign ministry to study the issue of opening a new border gate on the Iraqi- Turkish borders.
The paper added the new border gate is 17 Km from Khabour gate, adding that Iraq has submitted this proposal to open the gate in 1996 in order to increase the volume of commercial trade between the two countries.
The paper indicated that if the sanctions are lifted from Iraq, a project will be studied to install a natural gas pipeline from Iraq to Turkey which goes in parallel with the crude oil pipeline between Karkouk and Yamour on the port of Marsin, while Turkish companies will carry out excavation works for natural gas in Iraq.
