Barak and the situation in South Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 10/9/2000

Israel's prime minister Ehud Barak on Sunday held Syria fully responsible for all acts committed against Israel in South Lebanon.

In a press conference he held on Sunday in Keryat Shemouna settlement, north occupied Palestine, Barak said that Israel will exert all its efforts in order to return back its three soldiers safe to their families. The three soldiers were kidnapped on Saturday by the Lebanese Hizbullah party.

Barak added " we are still in the framework of an operation in which we face violence in the territories which fall under the Palestinian the Palestinian Authority. If we do not achieve a tangible progress in the two coming days we will consider that a deliberate act by the Palestinian Authority. We will call on Arafat to halt the negotiations and then we will instruct the army to work by all means in order to treat the situation with the Palestinians."

To this effect, the Israeli radio said on Saturday that the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak extended a very tough message to the Syrian and Lebanese governments and called on them to halt the "aggressive activities " along the joint borders very soon.

The radio added that Barak gave his instructions to the Israeli army to persistently work to ensure the security and safety of the Israeli citizens along the northern borders.
