Saudi Arabia calls for inaugurating an opening on the borders with Iraq
Jordan-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 10/7/2000

Saudi Arabia has called on the UN to open the "Jdedat Arar" opening so as to allow Saudi commodities to pass to Iraq in line with the oil-for-food program and UN resolution 986. Therefore this will be the fifth crossing opened for the passage of commodities to Iraq. The other four opening are through Jordan, Turkey, Syria and Um Qaser.

The Saudi representative at the UN Fawzi Abdul Majid Shabakshi sent a message to the sanctions committee which agrees on the contracts known as "committee 661" on Thursday in which he asked for consent to open " Jdedat Arar" crossing between the Kingdom and Iraq.

This is, however, the first time in which Saudi Arabia asks for an opening on the border with Iraq in the framework of UN resolution 986 and in an official message to the UN.
