British papers highlight common Arab feelings of anger, lack of effectiveness
Regional, Analysis, 10/7/2000

The British daily the Independent said in its Thursday issue that at a time when the Palestinian children are killed at the hands of the Israeli soldiers, the Arabs show some familiar feelings, mainly anger, lack of effectiveness and humiliation.

In a report by its correspondent to the Middle East Robert Fisk, the paper added should what is taking place in the Middle East takes place in another society, Jerusalem's crisis would have created a genuine political unity. He questioned what the Arabs won. The Iraqi President accuses Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as being hirelings for imperialism, the Sudanese are killed in the streets of Libya and Yemen and Saudi Arabia have lost confidence among themselves.

The paper added that Syria denounced the Israeli massacres in Jerusalem and the same did the Organization of the Islamic conference, while the Gulf papers said that an uprising is due to take place not knowing that such uprising has already started.

The paper added that the Arabs know since very long time that the practical measures taken by their governments are in contrary to the promises and words they state and for Israel knows this well that there is noting with the Arabs that raise its concern.

The paper added that TVs showed the Palestinian Child who is 12 years old while he was being killed by the Israeli bullets and most of the world TV slowly screened the incident which was a horrible scenes even for some of the Israelis.

The paper added that a group of Palestinians in Ein al-Helwah camp in Sidon ( Lebanon) asked for their right to walk towards Israel but the Lebanese authorities told them they can not.

For its part the British daily " Daily Telegraph" said that several Arab states, mainly Egypt had called for an Arab summit but the majority of Arab citizens believe that such a call is just " half of an initiative" and are calling for more practical measures against Israel.

The paper added that the Arab leaders might move their lips to talks about Arab solidarity but nobody will run the risk of a military confrontation with Israel.
