Casablanca commune elects new president

The Casablanca urban commune on Thursday elected Saad Laabassi as president.
Laabassi, who is member of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) was single candidate. The representatives of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, the Istiqlal Party and the Party for Progress and Socialism withdrew from the meeting in protest of the single candidacy. They termed the poll a "masquerade."
Out of the 170 members of the commune council, 149 attended the opening session and 89 only participated in the voting. Laabassi was elected by 56 votes.
The Commune had dismissed last September its former president, Abdelmoughit Slimani.
