President Mubarak's speech on the 27th anniversary of the victory of 1973 October war
Egypt, History, 10/5/2000

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak delivered a speech commemorating the 27th anniversary of the 1973 October War in which he hailed this war as a military feat proving the extreme courage of the Egyptian soldier and the ability of the Egyptian military to carry out a strategic initiative amid complicated international circumstances of unbalanced powers.

Therefore, waging a war to liberate the land seemed impossible but the Egyptian determination overcame all these circumstances depending on the people's confidence in the ability of their army to surmount any obstacles and face any challenges.

Meanwhile, the president referred to the 6th of October as the day on which the Egyptian people achieved one of their greatest and most immortal victories.

This victory deterred the aggression, restored the self-confidence of the nation, and proved the ability of the Egyptians to carry out a military action beyond impossible.

This action is based on the courage of decision-taking, well-preparation, planning, and high performance. All these elements reflect the high spirit of the Egyptians, their extreme love for their motherland, and their never-ending readiness for sacrificing their souls for every inch of their country.

In the meantime, the President stressed that Egypt's supremacy in war is equaled by her supremacy in peace as well since the historic courageous initiative taken by the late President Sadat, when he visited Jerusalem, opened the way for the negotiations for peace and stability.

In spite of the unjust accusations leveled at Egypt after her participation in the convention of Camp David I in 1978 and her signing of the peace treaty in 1979, history proved Egypt's insight concerning her vision of peace.

This insight helped Egypt to regain her occupied land through war, then negotiations, and finally international arbitration.

Finally, the president called on the Palestinians and Israelis to practice self-control in the face of the provocations of the enemies of peace. He also emphasized that the Arabs are faithful peace-makers looking for a historic settlement of the chronic dispute between them and Israel for a better life for all the peoples of the Middle East.
