Egypt urges UNSC to prevent Israeli forces from entering Al Haram Al Sharif
Egypt-Israeli, Politics, 10/5/2000
Egypt urged the United Nations Security Council to adopt the appropriate measures that would prevent Israeli security and army forces from entering Al Haram Al Sharif in the future.
It also called for an immediate halt to the Israeli army practices against Palestinian people, a denunciation of those practices and Israel's abidance by international law.
In a statement before the Council Tuesday night, Egypt's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Ahmed Abul Gheit said "Egypt is urging the council to reaffirm its stance that Palestinian lands, including East Jerusalem, seized in 1967, are occupied lands".
"Egypt wants an investigation into the shameful developments in occupied Palestinian land and to bring the Israelis responsible for shooting the Palestinians to justice. The provocative visit by Israeli opposition Leader Ariel Sharon to Al Aqsa mosque must be denounced," he said.
Ambassador Abul Gheit also called on the Security Council to work for protecting the rights of Palestinian civilians who have been hurt or killed by Israelis and to recompensate them or their families for the sufferings they have endured.
"The government and people of Egypt are not only outraged by the violence and killings practiced against the Palestinian people, but also by the arrogance and stubbornness of Israeli officials, who even refuse to admit Israeli's responsibility over the brutal developments," he said.
Should the Israeli government or people find it in their interest to escalate the situation to make political gains, Egypt warns that such approach would bring serious harm to the peace process, he warned.
"Israel must come to terms with the sensitivity of the status of Jerusalem and stop the use of military suppression to defend political stances that it knows very well do not enjoy any international legality or international support," he said.
"AL Haram Al Sharif is Islamic and will always remain Islamic, East Jerusalem is an occupied Palestinian land and Israel will have to end its occupation sooner or later," he added.
On the other hand, Palestinian ambassador to the UN Naser Al-Qudwa, called on security council to make investigations about the acts of violence practiced by Israeli forces in the occupied territories and Jerusalem . We should punish those responsible for the bloody actions so as not to be repeated he added.
