New proposals between Iraq and Iran
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 10/5/2000
The London based al-Sharq al- Awsat daily said on Wednesday, according to a well-informed source close to the Iranian government that Iraq had proposed to Iran to give up backing the Iranian opposition organization " Mujahidi Khalq" for an Iranian role in alleviating the UN embargo imposed on Baghdad since 1990 and closing off its borders in the face of the Iraqi opposition.
The paper added that the Iraqi offer came during a meeting held last week between the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami and the Iraqi vice- President Taha Yassin Ramadan in Venezuela capital, on the sideline of OPEC's summit.
The paper added that the Iranian higher council for national security will discuss results of Khatami talks with Ramadan in its next meeting.
