Swedish foreign minster Anna Lindh in Egypt, peace institute opening

Swedish Foreign Minster Anna Lindh stressed that Egypt is playing a key role in the peace process in order to realize a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East region and also as regards the thorny issue of the future of Jerusalem.

Addressing a ceremony on the occasion of opening the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Lindh said the peace process is passing through a critical stage, expressing concern over recent bloody and violent clashes in the Palestinian territories between the Palestinians and Israeli soldiers.

She added that Sweden and the European Union are following up these events with concern.

"There is a need now for a political will of Palestinians and Israelis in order to find solution to the Palestinian problem," She said.

Lindh said Egyptian-Swedish relations date back to 1345 when the Swedish king and the Sultan of Egypt agreed to export Swedish hawks to Egypt

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Minister of Higher Education and State for Scientific Research, Mufeed Shehab, Governor of Alexandria Abdul Salam Mahgoub and a host of foreign Ambassadors, Consults and Diplomats.

Addressing the ceremony, Moussa expressed thanks for the initiative offered by Sweden to set up this Institute which aims at enhancing development issues in the Middle East region and boosting the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
