Egypt: A prominent candidate in the parliamentary elections appeals a ministers' nomination
Egypt, Politics, 10/4/2000
A prominent candidate in the Egyptian parliamentary elections appealed in the ministers' nomination considering that their nomination is a violation to the provisions of the Egyptian constitution and he demanded in his appeal to the judiciary to ban members of the government from competing with candidates in departments in the same ministry.
The plea was held by Mohammed Zeinhom, the Nasari candidate - member of the current parliament , against his rival housing minister Mohammed Ibrahim - the candidate of the ruling National Party in Gamalia section of down town Cairo.
Zeinhom, said "the plea referred to the contradiction of the ministers' nomination with the constitution which requires the separation between the authorities and the minister's obtainment to a seat in the parliament." He said this contradiction " leads to mixing between the tasks of the deputy and the executive .. and that it put the deputies in a critical position if they wanted to judge their associates in his governmental capacity."
The deputy accused the housing minister of using the ministry for electoral propaganda which contradicts with the constitution.
