On the waters of Tigris and the Euphrates
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 10/3/2000
The British daily " the Guardian" issued on Monday said that Syria and Iraq have fears that the establishment of new dams on the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers in Turkey will threaten water supplies to them.
In a report for its correspondent in Ankara M Cress Maurice, the paper added after the worst drought in Turkey since 20 years, Turkish officials warned that they cannot provide Syria and Iraq with the amounts of waters the two countries need from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
The paper added that such warning raises concern in the Middle East region, where waters is considered the most sensitive issue.
The paper added, according to an unofficial agreement, it is presumed that Syria will receive 500 cubic meters of waters per second from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers who spring from Turkey and passes into Syria and Iraq.
The paper continued that the amount of water flowing to Syria during September dropped to 160 cubic meters per second and this amount is also expected to be decreased more during the current month of October.
The paper said that the level of the Turkish water storage was drastically reduced and the Turkish authorities say that the amounts of water it give to Syria will be decided by the extent of rainfall during the coming months.
Both Syria and Iraq complain from the ambitious Turkish programs in the area of building dams on the Tigris and Euphrates threaten the flow of the waters of the two rivers to their lands, but Turkey has been always persistent to say that water shortage is not linked to building dams, rather relates to the drought which hits the region as a whole.
