British week in Egypt to promote bilateral trade
Egypt-UK, Economics, 10/2/2000

Terming Egypt as a main trade partner of his country, British ambassador in Cairo Graham Boyce yesterday urged further promotion of bilateral economic links.

The British Ambassador who was speaking at an opening ceremony of the British companies working in different domains, expected a host of agreements to be sealed between Egyptian and British firms particularly in information technology, and management systems during the October 1-7 event.

The aim of the British week is to promote British Egyptian trade and encourage a deeper relationship so as to maintain Britain's high profile at the Egyptian market. The event is expected to help British manfacuters gain prime exposure to the local business sector.

Boyce cited Egyptian efforts to build on its economic strength, noting that the steady growth of the Egyptian economy would elicit British backing for promotion of Egyptian exports. There is a large number of British companies now in operation in Egypt, he remarked.

Egypt has implemented a successful economic reform progamme since the early 1990s, underpinned by deregulation and privatization.

The British week in Cairo coincides with the UK connect Egypt trade mission now visiting the country. The aim of the visit, running to October 5, is to explore fresh prospects for investment and joint cooperation.

Boyce hopes that Egypt and the European Union (EU) will sign shortly a long-negotiated partnership pact.

The two sides seem putting the final touches to the draft accord on which Egypt is pinning great hope to give its exports a stronger presence at the EU markets.
