Palestine, Politics, 10/2/2000

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Egypt Dr. Mohammed Sayed Tantawi said that "the violation committed by the head of Likud party Ariel Sharon and his group to al-Aqsa mosque square (sanctity) is unacceptable by all the heavenly religions and it must be punished."

He said in the meeting organized by the al-Azhar university in Cairo to support the Palestinian position yesterday in the center of the Islamic economy in the university - that Egypt entered into four wars to defend the Palestinian rights and it is ready to sacrifice every thing for the Islamic - Arab right in Jerusalem.

Egypt's Mufti Dr. Nasr Farid Wasel said that Israel's obstinate position is for the purpose of erasing Islam from the holy sites and gave the permission to defend them, adding "we need to cooperate and to express solidarity to bring back the rights to the Palestinians and to liberate the Islamic holy sites."
