Sudan, Politics, 10/2/2000
Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has called on all political parties in the country to compete in the presidential and parliamentary elections to take place in Sudan in November.
During his meeting on Friday evening with a number of Sudanese officials in Sahafa area, southern al-Khartoum, President al-Bashir stressed the need of the participation of all Sudanese parties and political forces in the march of reconciliation and peace and to devote all efforts to the march of building up the country and its construction.
He repeated his accusations to the people's congress party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi by provoking acts of riots in certain Sudanese states in order to obstruct the elections and the convening of the national congress.
The Sudanese president described the special congress of the ruling congress party which concluded its works on Friday evening as a good gathering as most of the split cadres returned back to the congress which had more that 10,000 members.
He added that the separation movement led by al-Turabi in 1999 was in the interest of the congress party and also the government because it alienated certain figures who were rejected by people in the war.
