Al-Assad, Mubarak's summit in Cairo

Meetings of the first day of the Syrian- Egyptian summit were concluded on Sunday between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.

Meetings between the two presidents started in a plenary meeting between the two presidents. On the Syrian aide, it was attended by the foreign minister Farouk al-Shara and the chairman of the Syrian diplomatic mission in Cairo Majid Abu Saleh.

On the Egyptian side, the meeting was attended by the prime minister Atef Obeid, defense minister Hussein Tantawi and Egypt's ambassador to Syria Muhammad Ahmad Ismael.

Following this meeting a close- door meeting was held and then another plenary meeting was held included besides the two presidents members of the Syrian and Egyptian delegations.

According to informed sources, the first day of the Syrian- Egyptian summit started and continued with great success.

Circles in the summit's works said that the atmosphere was very good and positive and that talks dealt with great number of issues pertaining to the Arab arena and developments in the region starting with the tense situation created by Israelis in holy Jerusalem and the Palestinian areas, bilateral relations and cooperation between Syria and Egypt in various economic fields.

Syrian sources said that "the cooperation between the 2 countries aims at achieving the full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan to borders before 1967."

It is scheduled that President al-Assad and President Mubarak will resume their talks today to complete all details already debated in the first day of the summit.

The two presidents are expected to hold today a joint press conference at the Egyptian presidency in Cairo in which they will answer questions to be put by the Syrian, Egyptian and Arab media as well as foreign correspondents.

On Sunday evening President Mubarak held a dinner banquet in honor of President Bashar at the Egyptian presidency. It was attended by members of the delegation accompanying President al-Assad, the Egyptian prime minister Atef Obeid, the defense minister Hussein Tantawi, the information minister Safwat al-Sharif, the foreign minister Amr Moussa and several cabinet ministers and governors, the political advisor for the Egyptian President Osama al-Baz.

On Sunday afternoon, President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Cairo in a visit to Egypt.

He was officially welcomed by President Mubarak and high ranking Egyptian officials.

Then, the two Presidents held a meeting attended by al-Shara and Abu Saleh and the Egyptian premier and senior cabinet ministers.

This is President Bashar al- Assad's first visit to Egypt after he had assumed the post of presidency in Syria and also it is the first official visit to an Arab or foreign country.
