Arab League emergency meeting over al-Aqsa mosque demonstrations
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 10/2/2000
An emergency meeting was held on Sunday at the premises of the Arab League (AL). It was attended by the AL secretary general Ismat Abdul Miguid and the permanent representatives of the AL.
The AL council discussed the request raised by Palestine to take a united Arab position towards Areil Sharon, the leader of the Israeli Likud party visit into al-Aqsa mosque and the massacres committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian citizens later inside the mosque or in other place in the west bank and Gaza strip.
In statements before convening the works of the emergency council, Palestine representative at the AL Muhammad Sbeih stressed that the Palestinian request from the meeting is the withdrawal of the Israeli army from al-Aqsa mosque.
He also called for trying Sharon as a war criminal and holding the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak responsible for backing Sharon in his visit.
Sbeih called on the Arab states to re-consider its relations with Israel after these massacres against the Palestinian people.
