Egypt - Syria coordination basis to serve Arab causes
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 9/30/2000
Egyptian Presidential Political Adviser, Osama Al-Baz stressed on Thursday the importance of President Bashar Al-Assad's visit to Cairo.
"The Egyptian-Syrian coordination constitutes a fundamental basis for serving the Arab causes in a bid to counter the challenges of the future and present," Al-Baz told the official Syrian News Agency SANA.
Al-Baz reiterated the full Egyptian support for the Syrian just position towards the Middle East peace process. The priority of Egypt-Syria political and diplomatic moves is to realise Israel's full withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights to the June 1967 and the Palestinian lands.
Syria seeks to recover all its lands, including the Golan Heights, that Israel occupied on June 4, 1967 in trade for signing a peace deal with Israel.
"Bashar is armed with an established national creed that puts the interests and rights of Arabs above any other consideration; and his deep vision on the Arab solidarity and activating joint Arab action goes in line with that of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak," Dr. Al-Baz said.
"President Bashar enjoys a deep feeling of national and patriotic responsibility that will enable him to follow the march of late President Hafez Al-Assad," Al-Baz added.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Ambassador to Damascus Mohamed Ahmed Ismail said that Egypt is the first country that the Syrian President visits after assuming power in July, terming it as very important.
In an interview with Radio Cairo broadcast Thursday morning, Assad said that this visit shows as the appreciation of Syria and its President for President Mubarak and is an indication of the importance of Egypt's role in the peace process at regional and international levels.
"Talks are expected to focus on the peace process especially on the Syrian-Israeli track and means of realising Arab solidarity," he said.
"The talks are also expected to touch on ways and means of boosting bilateral relations in various fields," Dr. Al-Baz added.
"The visit is to be paid prior to the Arab foreign ministers meeting that Foreign Minister Amr Moussa called for, a matter that will provide an opportunity for Egyptian-Syrian coordination as regards Arab action and Arab solidarity," Baz said.
The Syrian stance as regards the peace process is fair, he underlined adding that Syria calls for its right and for implementing the UN Security Council and international legitimacy resolutions.
"If Israel has the will and real intention to reach peace, the Syrians will have no problem in achieving just and permanent peace," he said.
