Moussa welcomes Barak proposal on Jerusalem
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 9/30/2000

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa welcomed Friday the proposal raised by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak on having what he termed as Jerusalem and Al- Quds, one next to the other, as two capitals.

"We accept and welcome Barak's proposal within its mentioned context. We understand that East Jerusalem, occupied in 1967, is Palestine's capital," Moussa added at a joint news conference with his Tunisian counterpart Habib Ben yehia.

"The demonstration, staged by Israel Right Wing Likud Leader Airel Sharon in Aqsa Mosque, was a kind of political terrorism, which should not be maintained" Ben Yehia said on his part.

"Governments are required to halt all forms of terrorism," he added.

Sharon's demonstration can not serve peace and will never, at the same time, change the Arab or Islamic stance regarding Jerusalem, he said, adding that this action by the Likud on Thursday furnishes some sort of political terrorism, which should not be continued.

"All governments are required to stem terrorism in all its forms, Moussa said.

"A demonstration like this and other thousands cannot serve peace, but rather make us stick more to our stance," Moussa said, reiterating that Israel has no right to this place.

"Such demonstrations indicate the weak Israel position," he added.

Sharon's has entered the grounds of A1-Aqsa Mosque and marched through it in a show-up under heavy police protection.

Sharon walked the grounds of the mosque amidst hostile cries of denunciation.

Taking up the international embargo on Iraq, Moussa said that the long-running sanctions against Iraq should come to an end, asserting that "eternal" sanctions could not be accepted.

Speaking at a press conference before leaving Tunis, Moussa said that the whole world is fed up with the policy, based on implementation of the sanctions and exaggeration in humiliating the people of Iraq.

"Iraq is part of the Arab world and we (Arabs) have a commitment toward its people," said Moussa.

He called for working to end this serious situation, caused by the sanctions, to a new one that would engender hopes that could encourage taking a stance to help catch glimpse of a glimmering light at the end of the tunnel.

Moussa voiced conviction that the Arab stance is developing on all arenas against maintaining the situation in Iraq as it is.

On the Arab summit, Moussa recalled that the Arab League Ministerial Council, which convened in early September, had reviewed a report by the five-way committee on holding the Arab summit periodically.
