Sudanese president invites opposition back to the country
Sudan, Politics, 9/30/2000

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has stressed that all Sudanese opposition parties are very near to a return to the country and to get involved in the political work, including the leader of the rebellion movement in South Sudan John Garang.

During his meeting on Thursday evening with the committees of the constitutional amendments and the constituent system of the special general congress of the currently held national Congress Party, President al-Bashir said the government's negotiations with certain political forces and all the opposition and the last of which was the meeting with the chairman of the opposition in Asmara Muhammad Othman al-Merghani are all promising.

President al-Bashir added that Sudan will witness a new political phase which realizes peace, reconciliation and comprehensive political solution.

Al-Bashir, on the other hand, criticized the former secretary general of the National Congress Party Hassan al-Turabi.

Worthy mentioning that al-Turabi who split from the ruling national congress party in 1999 had formed a party under the name of the " people's national congress," which is the only party in the country which provokes acts of riots and calls for fighting the government, according to statements by Sudanese officials.

On the other hand, the " Hizbul Ummah" led by former Sudanese prime minister al-Sadeq al-Mahdi announced readiness to maintain a dialogue with the government in order to reach reconciliation and peace.
