Syria: changes in the Baath Party leaderships, new governors to be appointed
Syria, Politics, 9/29/2000
The Regional leadership of the Baath party has approved new changes at the level of the Baath party branches at Aleppo university and in the provinces of Homs and Hama. These changes also covered besides the leaderships, the members.
Meantime, two Baath party committees are now touring the two coastal provinces of Lattakia and Tartous in the north and Daraa and Idleb in order to prepare their political reports about the new formations there.
However, parties of the Progressive National Front were given the green light to announce the establishment of their branches in various Syrian provinces so as to practice their own activities and not under the umbrella of the Front as the situation used to be.
Baath party sources in Damascus said that the Baath party branches and all their members in Homs, Hama and the university of Aleppo underwent a fundamental change in a step that falls in the course of " pumping new blood in the party" in order to " revitalize its performance on the political area."
The decision stated to appoint Tamer al-Hajji as secretary general for the Homs branch of the Baath Party and Mawfaq Bashouri as the secretary general for Hama branch and Ahmad al-Habou as the secretary for the Aleppo Branch. The two said provinces' branches include 16 members besides the two secretaries, who were replaced besides the 7-member team of the Aleppo university Baath party branch leadership.
The current changes were preceded by similar ones at the level of cities and universities branches. Including appointing the rector of the faculty of agriculture Adel Safar as chairman of Damascus university party branch in succession to Farouk Abu al-Shamaat who has become member at the party's regional leadership after the 9th Baath party regional congress.
Fahd Musharraf was appointed secretary general for the province of Sweida in succession to member of the current member of the Baath Party regional leadership Salaam Yassin who is also the minister of local administration, while Ahmad Jalloul was appointed as the chairman of Lattakia's branch of the Baath Party.
It is, however expected that the few coming days will witness changes in the Baath party branches in Lattakia, Tartous, Daraa and Idleb as well as Deir ezz Zour, while changes will come later to the provinces of Damascus, damascus countryside and Quneitra.
Well-informed sources in Damascus said that the Syrian leadership permitted parties of the National progressive front PNF to declare their own existence in the Syrian cities through hanging banners carrying their names or slogans or in opening headquarters for it in a step described by the secretary general of the Syrian communist Party ( Bakdash wing) Mrs. Wesal Farha Bakdash as a declaration of the parties fait accompli.
She added that the " Syrian communist party celebrated its 75th foundation anniversary at a sport stadium, which is a separate activity.
To this effect member of the political bureau of the Syrian communist party ( Youssef Faisal wing ) Daniel Na'meh said that this decision is a recognition of the rights of these parties to open branches for themselves in the cities " where these parties used to meet before under the umbrella of the Baath party and in the framework of the Front's meetings."
Na'meh added what is important now is the release of a law for parties that permits these parties to own capital as of separate status and their properties to be registered under their own names.
