Egyptian minister of business in Iran
Egypt-Iran, Politics, 9/28/2000

Egyptian minister of business sector Mukhtar Khattab heads today for Tehran in an official visit, which is the first for a high ranking Egyptian official to Iran since 20 years.

A source at the ministry said that Khattab who pays a visit to the United Arab Emirates UAE currently, will visit Tehran for three days, where he will inaugurate the Egyptian pavilion at the International Tehran fair which will be opened on Saturday.

This visit comes after the two countries resumed their relations following a boycott started in 1979 when Tehran blamed Cairo over giving the toppled Shah of Iran political asylum and its signing a peace agreement with Israel.

On June 21, President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak of Egypt made a telephone call with his Iranian counterpart Muhammad Khatami, after Iran has joined the 15 countries group in backing Egypt. This was the first direct contact on the highest level between the two countries since 20 years.

Iran participated in the 33 session of Cairo international fair last March after a 20 years absence.

Khattab said Egypt's participation in Tehran fair is a beginning for pushing cooperation forward between the 2 countries and he is to meet some officials and ministers from the Iranian government.

An Egyptian delegation under the chairmanship of the head of the trade chamber union Khaled Abu Ismail is to visit Iran in October the 17th.
