Giving up Jerusalem is a taboo, Jordanian scholars say
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 9/28/2000
Islamic Sharia scholars in the Islamic Action Front in Jordan on Wednesday released a Fatwa which prohibits giving up the city of Jerusalem or any part of it, or accepting Israeli sovereignty over it or over any part there or transferring any part of al-Aqsa Mosque to the Jews.
In their Fatwa, the scholars said that any agreement with the Jews to this effect is taboo, stressing that Jerusalem, al-Aqsa Mosque and their holy shrines are an Islamic Waqf and therefore cannot be sold or given and no official or ruler can give them up.
In Jerusalem, Palestinian teenagers threw stones at Israeli on- foot patrol and set fire to rubber tires during a demonstration they held against the Israeli occupation in Salah Eddine street, in which they stressed the Arab identity of Jerusalem and their rejection to the occupation.
Meantime, the Palestinian Legislative Council considered the visit of the chairman of the Israeli Likud party Ariel Sharon to the al-Aqsa mosque, leading a delegation representing Israeli extremists as provocative.
In a statement, denouncing this visit, the council held the Israeli government responsible for the results of such a visit and its consequences.
