On al-Assad's visit to Egypt
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 9/28/2000
The Egyptian daily al-Akhbar said on Wednesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will pay a visit to Egypt next Sunday.
In its Wednesday's issue, the paper added that talks between President Bashar al-Assad and President Hosni Mubarak will deal with backing the Syrian- Egyptian coordination in the service of the Arab causes and discussing the peace process on the Syrian track as well as means of achieving Arab solidarity and strengthening economic cooperation between the two states.
The paper added that a high ranking official including several high ranking officials at the Syrian government will accompany President al-Assad in his visit to Cairo.
Similarly, The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas quoted well-informed Egyptian sources as saying to the paper yesterday that President Bashar al-Assad will start his Arab tour next week and Cairo will be the first stop.
The sources stressed that talks between Presidents al-Assad and Mubarak will concentrate on the need of convening an extraordinary Arab summit discussing purifying the Arab atmospheres and finding out solutions to greater problems and backing the Arab sides in the peace process.
Arab sources close to the Syrian file said that President Bashar al-Assad will not propose new ideas in this summit concerning the Syrian file because Damascus is convinced that achieving a detente on this level is impossible at the current time due to the attempts made by Washington and Tel Aviv to pomp blood in the complicated Palestinian track for mere electoral objectives.
The sources continued that President Bashar al-Assad has accurately prepared himself for his first Arab tour and that his reading of the file was the main reason behind postponing his tour more than one time with the aim to introduce himself to the world and to the US, in particular through Egypt.
The sources said that a new Syrian ambassador will be appointed in Cairo and will be within the official delegation in order to mark a new phase of firm cooperation between Cairo and Damascus.
