Tunisian human rights organization blames authorities for death of three citizens
Tunisia, Politics, 9/27/2000

A Tunisian human rights organization blamed in a statement the Tunisian security authorities for the death of 3 Tunisian citizens in police stations and in prisons as well as torturing two other prisoners due to which the first lost his leg while the second lost his eye.

The statement demanded trying those involved and abandoning all means of torture as well as respecting the Tunisian citizen's human rights.

The organization welcomed the decision of the Tunisian president Zein El-Abidin Bin Ali concerning commencing an investigation in one of the complaints which he received about prisoner Mohammed El-Mansouri who was tortured till cutting his leg.

Afterwards, the Tunisian justice ministry issued a statement in which it has criticized the irrationality of the Tunisian human rights in publishing information without making sure of its accuracy which require clarifications from the public opinion, saying that the justice department opened an investigation into the death of the 3 citizens. The citizens are Haytham Saleh, 23 years old Shaker El-Azouzi who died near Hammamat city as the organization says that a soldier hit him on his head due to which he fell dead.

The justice ministry said it is suspending the person involved to investigate him while the third citizen was Mohammed Sabri who died in the police station due to torture while the justice ministry said that he committed suicide.
