Rift Valley fever in Yemen cause ban on importing animals from Africa
Yemen, Local, 9/27/2000

The Yemeni authorities took a decision to ban the importing of animals to an indefinite date due to the prevalence of the Rift Valley fever in many areas north the country.

The governor of Hodeida located 225 kilometers north West of Sanaa , said that the imported cattle from the African countries were banned into Yemen and all the import outlets were closed and the citizens were banned from moving animals.

Health minister Abdu Allah El-Wali said that the death and injury cases in the cattle reached 3,000 cases in the governorates of Wadi Moor and El-Zahra which is affiliated to Hodeida governorate.

The Yemeni government specified 100 million dollars as a primary sum to combat the disease amid fear that it would affect the animal stock in Yemen as it forms 33% of the agricultural production sources and 20% from the total national production.
