On President al-Assad's visit to Cairo

Well-informed Egyptian sources told the Lebanese daily al-Kifah al-Arabi issued on Tuesday said that President Bashar al-Assad will make his first visit to Cairo next Sunday.
The sources explained that President al-Assad will discuss with his Egyptian counterpart the ME peace process and bilateral relations.
Meantime, the Orient radio correspondent in Cairo said that the forthcoming visit of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Egypt has special significance in light of several regional and international considerations, noting that this is President Bashar's long-expected and first visit to Cairo.
The correspondent added that according to these sources this visit will mark the beginning of the first foreign tour for President Bashar, noting that relations between the late Syrian President Hafez al- Assad and President Hosni Mubarak was one of the best coordination relations and joint Arab work.
He added that President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Cairo brings Syria back to the political cycle in the region on the ground that Cairo is the center of the recent moves especially concerning the peace settlement and because of that the Syrian President has already organized " the house from the inside" and now is moving to reveal his foreign policy and the way Syria deals with various issues in the region.
Political sources told al-Sharq radio that the Egyptian- Syrian sources will determine to a great extent the form and nature of the pan Arab summit which is now under preparations.
The correspondent added that Damascus had called for an Arab summit to discuss challenges and developments while Cairo has called on the Arab foreign ministers to meet on October 21 to prepare for this summit.
He added that the well-informed sources speak that the pan summit which will be held according to the summit mechanism as approved by the Arab League will not be convened before March 2001.
The sources noted that Mubarak- al-Assad's summit will discuss prospects of the peace process on the Syrian track and problems on the Palestinian track, as well as the general Arab condition, especially the Iraqi problem.
