Egypt, Local, 9/26/2000
Dr. Saad El-Din Ibrahim, head of Ibn Khaldoun 'center for the developing studies' in Cairo negated the charges addressed against him and to 22 others.
The advisor Maher Abd El-Wahed, the Egyptian attorney general, said the accusation list which comprised bringing the suspects to trial before the supreme state security court in Cairo include among these accusations the receiving of donations from foreign parties without a permission and publishing false statements abroad to defame Egypt's reputation.
Saad El-Din said "I believe that escalating my case is tightly related to the parliamentary elections in Egypt for it is obvious from the Egyptian newspaper which launched its accusations against me lately," adding "we want to determine this case before a just judiciary and we a hope to bring it before a civil court."
He said the accuastions concerning receiving donations from abroad are not valid because the center has been in operation for 12 years and received funds from different fronts inside and outside Egypt because it is a private center and is registered as a civil company that has the right to contract with others in return for services and tasks it delivers.
