Bahraini women at the Shoura council for the first time
Bahrain, Politics, 9/26/2000

It has become evident that the Emir's decree to form a new Shoura council in Bahrain will be issued by the end of this week and that the new members will take their constitutional oath before Bahrain's prince Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa on September 30 and the council's first session will be held on October 3rd.

Bahraini news reports said on Monday that the Bahraini women will be represented to the council by five women who have higher studies, adding these women include Miss Alsen Samaan, who is a Bahraini Christian of an Iraqi origin, who is also of one of the well-known Christian families who came to Bahrain in the 19th century. Therefore Samaan will be the first Christian figure in the Gulf Cooperation Council GCC to assume a political post. And this falls in the framework of the openness policy pursued by Bahrain in all walks of life.

Miss Samaan had occupied several posts in the state's departments. She worked at one of the UN offices and at the Bahraini radio and TV.

It is known that the next Shoura council is the last council to be formed by a decree by the Emir of Bahrain, as the government has decided to form the next Shoura council by elections and with the participation of women. This will be according to a new law studied by officials concerned.

To this effect, Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al- Khaleifa stressed during his meeting on with the patriarch of the Greek-Orthodox Church in Turkey that Bahrain lives the " atmospheres of amity, tolerance, understanding and co-existence ," noting that his country backs all efforts aiming at establishing peace in the world.
