Azoulay chairs dedication of Moroccan Judaism exhibition
Morocco, Culture, 9/25/2000

Advisor to King Mohammed VI, Andre Azoulay, dedicated on Saturday in New York an exhibition on the multicultural art and traditions of Morocco and the history of Jewish life in Morocco for 2000 years.

Speaking at the ceremony, Azoulay underlined that the exhibition, held in the heart of New York, shows the richness of Morocco's heritage and the modernity of its history.

The Royal advisor, who recalled that he was speaking on behalf of King Mohammed VI who placed the exhibition under his high patronage, invited the audience to meditate on the title of the event "Morocco: Jews and Art in a Muslim Land."

"Which country other than Morocco would have been able with the same truth, the same credibility and the same strength, to invite New York in this month of September 2000, to discover this successful history of Islam and Judaism in Arab land," he said, highlighting the Moroccan King's mission and authority as Commander of the Faithful.

This exhibition, initiated by one of the institutions of the largest Jewish communities in the World, that of New York, renders justice to the Moroccan people and nation, who have always and throughout history defended Judaism while it was haunted, he said, recalling how the Late King Mohammed V opposed the Vichy and nazism laws, saying that in Morocco "there are only Moroccans."

For her part, Mrs. B. Mann, Curator of the New York Museum, said the exhibition will help Americans understand the diversity and depth of the Moroccan civilization.

In Morocco, tolerance has always prevailed and constituted a constant in the conviviality between religions, she said, asking Andre Azoulay to convey to King Mohammed VI the thanks of the Jewish community of New York.

More than 200 objects will be on display in "Morocco: Jews and Art in a Muslim Land'' exhibition, held under the aegis of King Mohammed VI. The exhibition will go on view September 24 at the Jewish Museum in New York.

The objects include Orientalist paintings by European artists such as Eugene Delacroix and Alfred Dehudeno, jewelry and ceremonial objects of silver and gold, textiles and costumes and 19th and 20th century photographs.

On the occasion of the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 11, 2001, a special catalog, "Morocco: Jews and Art in a Muslim Land,'' by Vivian Mann, has been produced. The 192-page book includes 200 illustrations with 120 in color highlighting Moroccan life, traditions and rich culture.
