Iraqis ask for asylum to the US
Iraq, Politics, 9/25/2000

The US migration authorities on Sunday held 22 Iraqi Christians from the Kelan's groups who claimed they were oppressed in their country after they had arrived in California coming from Mexico to ask asylum.

The Iraqis asked for asylum on the ground they are religious asylum seekers who have fears on their lives if they return back to Iraq.

An official at the migration department said that there is great possibility of accepting most of the asylum applications submitted by those Iraqis.

So far nothing is known about the fate of another group of Iraqi Christians numbering 114 who also submitted asylum on religious ground.

They are still in Tikhwana, Mexico, where they had arrived in the mid of last week and Mexico promised not to evacuate them. Worthy mentioning a large number of the Iraqi Keldan community have settled in San Diego area, which now include one of the greatest Keldan's community in the US.
