100 dead in violent fighting in Mogadishu
Somalia, Politics, 9/23/2000

A violence fight broke out in the Somali capital Mogadishu due to which more than 100 persons were killed.

The attack was launched by one of the groups whose chief objected to the assignment of the new Somali president. Somali sources said that this fight has something to do with killing the driver of the Somali chief Hussein Aideed 3 days ago with 2 others besides Aideed's opposition to the rapport conference in Djibouti due to which a president for the country was elected and a new parliament as well.

The sources added that the timing of this fight which began during the beginning of the committee appointed by the president for collecting the militias' weapons to restore the security and stability assures that the fight obstructs the government's efforts in restoring the stability and security and "we do not exclude avenging operations by the militias," saying that the Somali president enjoys public support in Mogadishu and in many areas in Somalia.

The sources added that most of the militias as well as the inhabitants in Mogadishu support the president and the government yet there are some militias that oppose the new regime, saying "the response is great for handing over the weapons as more than 3,000 rifles and 200 tanks were delivered and most of the militias are now in the government's hand."
