Spanish foreign minister hails King Mohammed' positive visit to Spain
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 9/21/2000
Spanish foreign minister, Josep Pique, hailed as positive the official visit King Mohammed VI paid to Spain Sep. 18-20. The visit is a step forward in the development of a new model of relations between Rabat and Madrid, Pique told the Moroccan first TV channel RTM.
King Mohammed VI's visit to Spain at the invitation of King Juan Carlos I was crowned with the signing of two cooperation accords, worth $ 90 million, on investments in Moroccan northern regions and debt-swapping.
For Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, King Mohammed VI's visit to Spain was a "full success." It was an opportunity for the Spanish civil society to know first hand about the new era in Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
In an interview with Tangier-based Medi 1 radio, Royal advisor for economic and financial affairs, Andre Azoulay, said King Mohammed VI's statements on the need to promote a "strategic partnership" were well received by the Spanish government.
This partnership, as stressed by the king, will be implemented according a contract of trust between the two countries, said Azoulay, adding that King Mohammed VI's statements on the Moroccan-Spanish relations were accurate and direct.
Relatedly, the Spanish press largely commented the outcome of the king's visit to the Iberian nation, noting, however, that much is yet to be done.
El Pais daily termed as "extraordinary" the satisfaction of Spanish Premier, Jose Maria Aznar over the results of the Royal trip to Madrid, especially the conclusion of three cooperation accords.
La Vanguardia newspaper noted that Morocco renewed its historical rights over Sebta and Mellilia, two Moroccan northern still controlled by Spain.
"Morocco and Spain started a new page in their bilateral relations, although other historical problems are still pending," said La Vanguardia, adding that King Mohammed VI's visit will help consolidate, within the European Union, Morocco's calling as a modern country.
