Amnesty International denounces Egyptian elections arrangements
Egypt, Politics, 9/20/2000

The Amnesty International has denounced the campaign of systemic obstruction carried out by the Egyptian government to prevent the opposition from taking part in the legislative elections which will be held in October and November.

A report by the Amnesty International "Muzzling the civil society" on Tuesday said with the approaching of the elections risks of increased detention cases among activists in opposition circles have been notable increased.

The Amnesty International added that activists in human rights area and journalists who denounce the basic violations of these rights have become targets for the Egyptian Authorities. It explained that Egypt has legal measures to limit the freedom of expression and against taking part in organizations, noting that among these measures are the terrorism- fighting law, the press law and the parties law.

The Amnesty international added in its report that at least 150 persons of the Muslim brothers group are still under detention under " unclear" accusations. It called on the Egyptian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the detainees who are jailed because of their views especially political and religious ideas and did not resort to violence or called for it.

The Amnesty international said that the freedom of expression is threatened in Egypt by the armed Islamic groups who called for killing intellectuals considered by it as political opponents.
