Syrian efforts to contain war of words between Iraq and Kuwait
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 9/20/2000

According to sources it did not identify, the Qatari daily al-Watan expected the Syrian diplomacy to make intensive moves in the Arab Gulf region to contain the tension currently taken place in the region, resulting from the "war of words" between Iraq and Kuwait.

The circles told the paper which was issued in Doha on Tuesday that the Syrian leadership follows up with concern conditions in the region and did not rule out that President Bashar al-Assad will delegate his foreign minister Farouk al-Shara to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as well as other countries in the Gulf region to hand over leaders of these countries messages concerning conditions in the region and the peace process.

To this effect, the Saudi daily al-Riyadh said on Tuesday that the threats made by the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein against Kuwait are linked to the current "world oil game " and the question of " Saddam Hussein ' sickness and who will succeed him as well as who will win in the US elections."

In its Tuesday's editorial, the paper added that these threats will be for the benefit of the oil companies which control the world market and to divert the attention from Saddam's illness by fabricating a position concerning Kuwait and the Gulf states amid the increase in fuel prices and the failure of the Middle East peace negotiations.
