Six sentenced to death in Jordan over being members in al-Qaedah organization
Jordan, Judicial, 9/19/2000

The state security court in Jordan on Monday sentenced 6 persons to death after being condemned of being members of al-Qaedah (the base) of the Saudi Islamist businessman Osama Bin Laden.

In an open session for the court by the military judge Tayel al-Raqqad, Khurd Abu Housher and Osama Sammar who were arrested and jailed in Jordan since the beginning of this year and other four men living outside the country, including the general supervisor for Fatah forces in Lebanon Col. Munir al-Maqdah; Raed Khalil and Ibrahim Abu Helewah who live in Afghanistan and Muhammad Ibrahim who live in Syria were all sentenced to death.

Following the end of the trial which was held under special and strong security measures, the accused men defendants described the sentences as " political and is not based on confessions," noting that most of the accused men do not know Bin laden and have not met with him.

In February, the Jordanian intelligence director Samih al-Bateikhi said that " Jordan considers Bin Laden as the most dangerous terrorist for it," noting that the Jordanian authorities gave information about Bin Laden's network and his aides in the US and Canada.

In March this year, the US defense secretary William Cohen described arresting the member of Bin laden's group in Jordan as " Jordanian story of success."
