Mubarak meets with party leaders

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak met on Sunday With a number of political Party leaders, with the coming People's Assembly elections topping the issues discussed.

Khaled Moheiddin, leader of al-Tagammu party, said President Mubarak's talks with him covered the Egyptian people's aspirations regarding the coming parliamentary elections.

Moheiddin expected a more positive popular participation in the coming election, now that full judicial supervision of the voting process had been ensured.

Rifaat el-Saeed, the party secretary general who attended the meeting, said President Mubarak pledged that the coming elections would be fair.

Noaman Gomaa, leader of the new Wafd Party, said following his first ever meeting with President Mubarak that he was much impressed with the President's character.

Gomaa said he spoke frankly about opposition demands and about gradual political reforms in Egypt.

Gomaa also told President Mubarak that the Wafd would field some 300 candidates in the coming election.

Diaeddin Dawood, leader of the opposition Nasserist party, said following a meeting with President Mubarak that the recent changes in the election system had inspired considerable popular hope.

The recent measures championed by President Mubarak will lead to fair and democratic elections, Dawood said.
