Morocco-Spain, Politics, 9/18/2000

Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who is accompanied by his sister Princess Lalla Meriem, was received this Monday by King Juan Carlos of Spain at "El Pardo" Palace in Madrid.

The king starts this Monday his first official visit to Spain.

The King's party comprises minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, minister of Justice, Omar Azziman, minister of economy, finance, privatization and tourism, Fathallah Oualalou and minister of culture and communication, Mohamed Achaari, and minister in charge of women condition, family and childhood protection and integration of disabled persons, Mrs nouzha Chekrouni.

Advisers to the king, Andre Azoulay and Mrs Zoulikha Nasri, and several other high ranking officials are also part of the delegation.

The visit is expected to give a new impetus to the already privileged ties of friendship and cooperation binding Morocco and Spain.

Several Cooperation accords are to be concluded during the Royal visit.

Spain is one of Morocco¹s major commercial partners. In 1999, trade between the two nations totaled $ 1. 9 billion with a surplus in favor of Spain.

The Iberian country hosts a large Moroccan community. According to Spanish figures, the number of expatriates living in Spain went up from 15,000 in 1990 to 250,000 currently, representing the first foreign community living in Spain.
