Morocco calls world to help Palestinians gain independence
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 9/16/2000

Morocco called on the international community to help the Palestinian people recover its inalienable and legitimate right to independence with Al-Quds Asharif (Jerusalem) as capital.

The call was made by Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, in a speech before the 55th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Benaissa also said that Morocco shares the joy of the Lebanese people following the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. The Minister likewise underlined that Morocco will continue its infallible backing to the Syrian people to recover its full sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Touching on the situation in Iraq, Benaissa voiced concern over the conditions imposed on the Iraqi people due to the embargo, which deprives the population, especially children, from medicines and food.

"Morocco is highly concerned over the food and health situation in Iraq," Benaissa said, voicing backing to all international efforts likely to lift the sanctions on this brotherly country.

He also stressed that the preservation of Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity is a basic condition for the stability of the region as a whole.
