Morocco criticizes occupation of Moroccan presidios
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 9/16/2000
Morocco criticized the occupation by Spain of Moroccan Sebta and Mellilia and the neighboring Islands.
"The occupation (of Sebta and Mellilia and the neighboring Islands) are contrary to international law and history," Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, said in a speech before the 55th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Minister underlined that "it is possible to imagine a solution, preserving Morocco's sovereignty and Spain's economic, social and cultural interests."
Benaissa recalled in this connection the initiative launched by the late King Hassan II, to create a group to ponder on a final settlement of the presidios issue.
"Our two countries (Morocco and Spain) have the duty to spare our peoples and our region all sources of misunderstanding," he said, adding that it is in this spirit that Morocco proposes to Spain to start a joint reflection to settle this territorial contention, once and for all.
