Kuwaiti discusses Iraqi compensations of the Gulf War with France
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 9/15/2000

Kuwaiti diplomatic sources said that Sheik Saud Naser El-Sabah, the Kuwaiti oil minister, traveled to Paris yesterday to discuss reasons behind Russia's and France's delaying to grant compensations of 21,5 billion dollars which Kuwait asks from Iraq.

Sheik Saud, who was in Vienna to attend the meeting of O.A.P.E.C, traveled to Paris with a message from the Kuwaiti leadership to French prime minister Lionel Jospin concerning delaying paying the compensations of the second Gulf War in 1991.

The specialized affiliated committee to the U.N delayed paying the compensations of the Gulf War twice as these compensations are demanded by Kuwait and are estimated at 21,5 billion dollars for the petroleum destroyed by Iraq during its occupation of Kuwait for 7 months.

It was decided that the committee's executive council comprises the 15 members of the UN Security Council will convene once more in the current month in Geneva to reconsider the compensation case and to decide whether Kuwait will be granted (15,9) billion dollars which were recommended by independent judges and that the French as well as the Russian envoys are behind delaying the compensation case raised by Kuwait in front of the compensations committee which is affiliated to the U.N in Geneva.
