Moussa, Albright probe peace process and Jerusalem
Egypt-USA, Politics, 9/13/2000

Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa held talks Tuesday with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright over a working breakfast she had on his honour.

"Talks dwelt on the resumption of US-Egyptian coordination and the two countries' common understanding," Moussa said.

"The two sides discussed possible future steps with respect to the peacemaking drive on the Palestinian-Israeli track," Moussa added.

Moussa said that Egypt and the US believe in the importance of the element of time and the necessity to beef up efforts to avoid squandering the opportunity to reach a settlement that would appeal to the Palestinians and the Israelis ahead of the US Presidential elections, slated for November.

On proposals floated on Jerusalem, Moussa asserted that they all deny any Israeli sovereignty over Al-Haram Al-Sharif (Al-Aqsa Mosque, Dome of the Rock) and the so called Wailing Wall.

Moussa had discussed with US Permanent Delegate to the UN Richard Hoolbroke the issues on the agenda of the UN General Assembly over a working luncheon hosted by the US diplomat.

On the sidelines of UN General Assembly 55th session, Foreign Minister Amr Moussa took part in Arab League's Foreign Ministers meeting on Monday.

The meeting dealt with the latest developments of the Middle East peace drive, especially on the Palestinian track along with the Arab League unwavering support for the Palestinian stance.

Talks covered Arab League's call for applying relevant international legitimacy resolutions on the Palestinian cause, Arab coordination on issues tabled on the agenda of UN General Assembly session and conditions in Somalia and Sudan.

Moussa held on Monday a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on means of deepening bilateral cooperation on issues tabled on the UN General Assembly session.

Moussa met with the Italian Foreign Minister in order to probe the European role along with other issues related to UN reforms and expansion of UN Security Council.

Talks covered Barcelona Process, Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and means of promoting bilateral cooperation.
